Translation:

Chinese painter Sue Yang’s "Memory" exhibition is currently at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts William Morris Hunt Memorial Library. These 15 paintings showcase the artist's unique and creative approaches to the concept of abstract memory within her series of works.

Sue Yang pointed out that memory can be elusive, very fragile, often blurred, and, although momentary and fleeting, is forever retained. Her "Memory threads" series feature dyed and twisted toilet paper for the creation of materials which, like memory, can easily dissolve, fade and fray.

For the creation of her "Memory" theme, Sue Yang drew inspiration from her 95-year old mother who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Her mother is able to cope with her "memory" by living in an unexpectedly happy past. The triptych work "Time",in a pink tone, symbolizes her mother’s ability to regress back to her girlish innocence and youthful appreciation of beauty. The beautifully fragile dyed toilet paper creates the medium for expressing "Time: the memory thread from clear and rational to excessive chaos and the process of loss ".

This "Memory" series includes one diptych “Tuscany”. Sue Yang won the SMFA Traveling Fellowship in 2011 and toured Italy including Tuscany which inspired her diptych. Incorporating grape vines, she created 3-D art imitating a pair of Chinese cursive calligraphy scrolls. Her Chinese painting name seal and studio name seal, are all done using Tuscan wines. The resulting work is both innovative and playful.

Besides 11 pieces of the "Memory" series, the three "Chanting" works were created in which each individual stroke was executed with a simultaneous chant recitation. Also one landscape artwork is included using recycled tea and coffee grounds.

In Taiwan, Ms. Sue Yang studied under the Chinese painting master, Fu Chun-fu. She was actually first employed in the computer industry for years. In middle age, she resumed her career in art. Starting with Chinese brush painting, she then studied and explored modern art, gradually transitioning to image and contemporary and conceptual art. In addition to her own creative work, she teaches Chinese painting at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston as well as contemporary painting at the School of Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. This exhibition summarizes the "Memory" series of her three years of creativity. Her traditional painting and calligraphy skills are ever present in these works, albeit inadvertently and never deliberately. For her, using contemporary painting to show the Chinese landscape is the next creative direction, a very natural return and choice.

Sue Yang Art Exhibition Address: 300 Massachusetts Ave., 2nf Floor Boston 617-369-3385. Extended to December 14.2017.
